Week 4 Question

Tree-ear returns from his journey to the palace and reports back to Min. Describe the scene when he goes to talk to Min, and tell what you think Min is saying on page 143 when he calls after Tree-ear and Ajima saying, "It is fine work, Tree-ear".

Week 3 Discussion Question - Wyman

Tree-ear is struggling whether or not to tell Min about Kang's new technique (that he discovered by spying on him). Crane-man says, "If a man is keeping an idea to himself, and that idea is taken by stealth or trickery - I say it is stealing." Tree-ear decides not to tell Min. Do you agree with his decision? Why or why not? Once Kang's new technique is revealed, do you think Tree-ear will encourage Min to try it in order to gain the royal commission? Why or why not? Make sure to support your thinking with specific examples and information from the text.

Week 3 Discussion Question

As Tree-ear prepares for his journey, he has much to do and think about. Min's wife offered food to Crane-man in return for his help, while Tree-ear is gone, but at first he politely refuses. Tree-ear thinks about this action in this way, "Why was it that pride and foolishness were so often companions?"(p. 102). What does he mean? Can  you relate with any experience from your life?

Week 2 Discussion Question

Tree-ear must learn about his master Min from others. Min is also not telling him how to do things or giving him any direction. Tree-ear must watch and breathe in his work, but he never "hears a word from Min himself." Why is Min so hard on Tree-ear and why do you think he never gives him help on what he should be doing?
