Tree-ear is a child who was adopted by a man named Crane-man. They live under a bridge and struggle to get food. Tree-ear loves to watch a potter, Min, make pottery and has always wanted to make pottery. Crane-man is a crippled man who needs crutches in order to be able to walk. His name was given to him because of his leg. I think that Tree-ear is an evesdropper. He listens to the other villagers conversations and is always hangin around them to see what they are talking about. I also think that Crane-man has some guilt for Tree-ear because he was dropped off one day and has never really had a true family or a family that can put a roof instead of a bridge over his head. I think that he is very proud of Tree-ear.
(I choose to do Tree-ear.)I think Tree-ear is a very thoughtful person; he is always thinking of Crane-man, like how he always saves half of his mid-day meal for Crane-man. I think he also kicks himself when he doesn't do something right, like when he didn't save his mid-day meal for Crane-man on the first day. He thought, Crane-man would've saved some for me. I also think he has a desire to please because he tries so hard to make Min and Crane-man happy. Tree-ear is independent because he could determine which mushroom was poisonous and which was tasty in the woods, so he would have been able to survive in the forest alone. Obviously, Tree-ear works very hard on everything he does.
Tree-ear is very thoughtful of Crane-man. He also is down on himself a lot. After he made the mistake of being greedy and not saving food for Crane-man, he was mad at himself. That shows he gets down on himself. An example of Tree-ear being thoughtful of Crane-man is when Crane-man offers to help chop wood, but he find a respectful way to say no so Crane-man does not get hurt.
Tree ear is very hardworking and grateful. Whenever tree ear can not think of what to do or say he always thinks back to what Crane Man would do. Such as when he did not save food for Crane Man. When he realized his mistake he realized that crane man would have saved food for him. Also, Tree ear asked crane man if it would be stealing an idea if he saw someone doing something and took it as his own. This happened in the book when tree ear saw Cane writing on his pottery. Tree ear tries to get the best out himself. He decided to chop wood all by himself even when Crane man offered to help.
One of the characters that I met was Crane Man. I think that he is one of the most important characters.Crane Man is very well respected by Tree-Ear. He is also determined. Even though he couldn't walk very well, Crane Man went down to the beach and tried to get food for Tree- Ear and himself. Crane Man is very good with streets smarts. He is a smart teacher and very patient. Especially with Tree-ear. When Tree-Ear brought back rice that Crane Man probably wanted to take and eat right away, instead he waited for Tree-Ear to tell the story. I am pretty sure that if Tree-Ear had just taken the rice and didn't tell the man, Crane Man would make him return it no matter how hungry they were. I think this because just taking from the ground is like stealing and Crane Man says that begging and stealing make a man no better than a dog. No one really likes Crane Man because of his leg and the fact that he is poor. Tree-Ear understands how graceful and amazing Crane Man is. Crane man might have been lonely in life if he hadn't been so nice to Tree-Ear. If Crane Man was mean to Tree-Ear and Tree-Ear left to go with the people when the disease was gone, not only would Crane Man be lonely, But Tree-Ear wouldn't have learn some of the best life lessons that many people forget. He also would have missed a new way to see the world. Crane Man is a interesting story character that will teach people new things even though he is in a book. I enjoy the way that Crane Man can be happy and positive in some of the worst times. He taught Tree-Ear responsibility and would help Tree-Ear in a problem. Cran Man is a important character and he is very kind.
I think that tree ear is a very respectful person. He is always nice to others and respects them.Crane man is like tree ears teacher in a way.Crane man gives words of wisdom to ree ear.
I think Crane-man is a good person because he took Tree-ear in and is taking care of him even though they are both homeless and have to share food and that type of stuff. Is a strong man even though he only has one leg. In the story it says he is able to work really well for a man with only one leg.

Crane Man is an old man that has been living under a bridge. He is called crane man because he was born with a crippled leg. Crane Man is very wise and has a lot of street-smarts. He believes there are certain ways to get food that are not allowed, and that even when you don't have anything be respectful and do not beg or steal. Crane Man is very wise, very poor, and very complex.
Single Shard Question Written by Andrew A.Who is Tree-Ear? Tree-Ear is a very respectful person and has very good manners. One way Tree-Ear is respectful is that he is kind to Crane-Man by saving half of his midday meal to give to Crane-Man at the end of the day. Also he is very undemanding because when he asked Min if he could work for him and Min said that he would get no pay, Tree-Ear respected that and worked for Min without complaining.
I agree Tree-ear is undemanding and has good manners. I think he is clever because he planned to get the leaking rice from the farmer
I think that Crane-man is a very important part in Tree-ears life because he has taught Tree-ear how to be respectful and kind. Also he is more of a friend then a father to Tree-ear and has celebrated with him and been like a second father to Tree-ear. I think that Tree-ear is very respectful because when he got caught by Min; Tree-ear did not run or lie. Tree-ear came out with the truth and told Min that he has be looking at Min on the days he makes his pottery. Also after Tree-ear had done his 9 days of work for Min; he still came back to help and learn how to make pottery. Another reason why Tree-ear is respectful is when ever he went over to Min’s house he never called Min or his wife by their name, but by “Honorable Pottery” and “ Honorable Potter’s Wife”. Also, I think that he has respect for Crane-man because he saves half of his mid-day meal for Crane-man after he realizes that Crane-man would have done the same for him.

Tre-ear is a kind person who is willing to work for no pay. He is wise because he didn't act greedy and eat the whole bowl of food and saved some for Crane-man. He learns easily from his mistakes and has good manners and doesn't loose his temper. I think Tre-ear is very wise and has good manners.
Tre-ear is very wise because he was not greedy and and didn't eat all the food in the bowl and saved some for crane-man. He is very polite because he bows to everyone and doesn't loose his temper. He learns from his mistakes really fast and makes up for them. Tre-ear is even willing to work for no pay. Tre-ear is very wise and should be a respected person.
I think it is great but you might want to say why people don't respect Tree-ear to begin with. -KoriRus
Crane-man is a good natured person who is wise and loves Tree-ear very much. Not only is Crane-man wise but he is also poor, and, despite the fact that he has a bad leg and lives under a bridge, he still took Tree-ear (a young boy) in a few years ago. So Crane-man is kind. I also think that Crane-man feels bad for Tree-ear.I know all of this because of evidence in the book like “But stealing and begging, Crane-man said, make a man no better than a dog.” That is a very wise quote and it makes the reader stop and think about even though Crane-man has been through so much, (with a shriveled leg and bridge that is the “roof” over his head) Crane-man has never complained or stolen or begged. So Crane-man is wise and and good natured. I think that he feels bad for Tree-ear because when Tree-ear was a 2 year old orphan Crane-man decided to keep him and share his place with him, also, Crane-man is always trying to provide for Tree-ear, like on page 35, Tree-ear says, “ A run of flounder meant that a school of the tasty fish had come in far closer than usual; the waves even tossed fish up right on the beach. Such news sent many scrambling for their bamboo poles. But one had to be among the first to run from the village down to the shore. The flounder found their way back out to sea soon enough, and the fish flopping about on the sand were scooped up only by the quickest. It had always been Tree-ear who skipped out to the beach at the first word of a flounder run...now he new without asking that Crane-man had hobbled down to the beach and lurched about on the sand…”So, no matter how bad his leg was and how slow he was, he still tried to go get food for Tree-ear and himself, so I think that Crane-man feels bad that as young as he is, Tree-ear is living under a bridge with not the best things in the world to eat.So Crane-man feels a little bit of pitty for Tree-ear.That is who Crane-man is, a good natured, wise person who helps not only himself, but others and that is my evidence.
I think that you did an amazing job! You have very good details and you give examples for everything you needed to and more. Keep up the great work! -KoriRus
In my opinion Tree-Ear is a curious funny guy who always thinks before doing like when he saw that farmer drooping his rice from the crate and Tree-Ear thought “I could get that rice, or tell the farmer that his crate is leaking.” He likes to be helpful and respectful to Crane-man and other people who are nice to him. Crane-man is a man who is very elderly and generous he likes to encourage Tree-Ear and respect him because they are friends and Tree-Ear is one of the most valuable things in Crane-man’s life and he likes to have Tree-Ear come and chat with him.
Ethan I agree Tree-ear is very respectful because he doesn’t complain when Min gives him hard work to do
Tree-ear is a curious young man of about 12 years of age. He is kind, smart and clever. He also has an appreciation for art. Every throwing day he hides behind a tree to watch the famous potter Min work. He also is very thoughtful. He puts the needs of others before his own. Like when he gave some of his rice to crane-man
I agree Luke he does have an appreciation for art but be a little more descriptive,What kinds of art does he like?
Tree-ear is a boy of good deed. An example of this is when he saw a man with a package of rice and it was spilling he told the man before he lost all of his rice as a result he got some rice that was on the ground from the man.He also lives with a man called Crane Man under a bridge. Every day he hides behind a tree to watch a potter. That and the title gives me a hint that Tree-ear may become a potter.
I agree Reid ,he is a boy of good deed. Great examples.
Tree-Ear and Crane-Man are two people who live under a bridge. Tree-Ear is 12 years old and Crane-Man is who knows how old he is. They both share food and just joke around. Tree-Ear could be categorized as an observer. He always observes Mar, a potter that could be the best in the world. It says in the book, “Tree-ear made his way cautiously to his favorite spot, behind a paulownia tree whose low branches kept him hidden from view.”(and a good place to see). Tree-Ear was watching Min. Another characteristic of Tree-Ear is persistent. When he was caught picking up the container, he tried his best to do the work he had to do. An example of that is when Tree-Ear cut his hand badly on the mountain but he persisted through the pain. Those are two characteristics of Tree-Ear.
I think Tree-ear is a very nice and caring person because he lives with Crane-man. The main reason I say that is because of what he said in the beginning ( “A person who steals or begs is no better than a dog.” ). Another reason I think Tree-ear is so nice is because of Min and the other potters. The reason I say that is because when he watched Min it made him want to be a potter and gave him determination to be a potter.
(I chose Crane-Man) Crane-Man is very caring and loving for Tree-Ear. When Tree-Ear came to Crane-Man, he was willing to take him in. Since they lived together for 10 years, they have to have a good connection and can’t go away if they get annoyed ( since they live under a bridge ). Also Crane-Man is generous for making sandals by hand for Tree-Ear, and he doesn’t have to. Also Tree-Ear thinks about Crane-Man a lot. Since on the first day of Tree-Ear’s work of getting paid by food he feels bad for not saving any food for Crane-Man since he knew Crane-Man would do the same for him. Crane-Man seems determined even with one injured leg he went down to the beach and got food for him and Tree-Ear, he also was willing to do Tree-Ear’s work for Min when Tree-Ear got hurt in his hand.
Tree ear is very hardworking and grateful. Whenever tree ear can not think of what to do or say he always thinks back to what Crane Man would do. Such as when he did not save food for Crane Man. In the story A Single Shard, A boy named Tree-ear is an orphan whose parents both died and a man went looking for a home for him and ended up finding a homeless man named Crane-man who is one leg too short and they have to struggle to find good food. This boy loves to watch a potter named Min on “Throwing Days” doing what Tree-ear calls magic, shaping the clay into pots. One day he sneaks into Min’s house and looks at amazing pottery. But that doesn’t mean that he is a bad-hearted kid. For example, When he saw a farmer delivering his crops of rice, and leaving a trail of it due to a leak in his jiggeh (a backpack like thing made out of reeds) , he tells him and ends up getting the fallen rice. As you can see, this boy is very special.
I think Min is hard on Tree-ear because Min was hard on his son when he was still alive. He probably expects Tree-ear to know everything because thats what he expected from his son. I think Min is only hard on Tree-ear because he was used to treating his son that way. When Min’s son was still alive he was an only child so he probably got all the attention and knew everything so that is why Min expects Tree-ear to pretty much read Min’s mind.
Who is Tree-ear? Tree-ear and Crane-Man live under a bridge. Tree-ear is a 12 year old boy who is kind and respectful. Tree-ear calls Min, the potter honorable potter. He cares about Crane-Man and always wants to get him food. When a man walks over the bridge they live under a man had a hole is bag. He was dropping rice and Tree-ear told him and got the rice he dropped. He calls Min’s wife honorable potters wife. He is also caring. He also doesn’t disrupt the potter. He watches through a tree and doesn’t distract the potter.
Crane-man is a homeless, yet very wise man who lives under a bridge with Tree-ear. He is wise because he always uses words of wisdom. In the book he says,”Keep your ears open.” What he is trying say is don’t look for the obvious but keep your ears open for anything that may be said instead of an action. He is a great teacher for Tree-ear and a good example. He is a man who is very nice because he took Tree-ear in as pretty much his son.
