Week 3 Discussion Question - Wyman

Tree-ear is struggling whether or not to tell Min about Kang's new technique (that he discovered by spying on him). Crane-man says, "If a man is keeping an idea to himself, and that idea is taken by stealth or trickery - I say it is stealing." Tree-ear decides not to tell Min. Do you agree with his decision? Why or why not? Once Kang's new technique is revealed, do you think Tree-ear will encourage Min to try it in order to gain the royal commission? Why or why not? Make sure to support your thinking with specific examples and information from the text.

Make sure to write in complete sentences and use details from the story to support your answers. Type this in your 'blogging doc' first so you can make corrections if necessary. Make sure to edit and revise your answer before you post it.

  1. I think Tree-ear should tell Min. I think that because it is not like Tree-ear is stealing his idea. It could mean that Kang’s idea is so beautiful that Tree-ear and Min want to try it out. It could be like a competition to see who’s pottery is the best. I think Tree-ear will try to convince Min to try out for royal commission because Tree-ear is very willing to get Min to Puyo and Tree-ear will do anything to get him into the commissioner’s mind.

  2. I think that Tree-ear not telling Min is good. If he tells Min, it will just put more pressure on Min. Tree-ear doesn’t want to upset Min anymore. He is stressed out enough with the emissary here and doesn’t want to be treated any worse than he already was. I think that once Kang’s invention is revealed, Tree-ear will encourage Min to stick to his own techniques. Min is already a successful potter and should stick to what made him successful. Min is amazing and Tree-ear looks up to him. He wants Min to stay as he is and stay successful. Min should stick to his own pottery, and let Kang do his thing. Like, for example when the emissary came to the house. It wasn’t because he didn’t like Kang’s technique, it was because he liked Min’s technique. He should stay the way he is!!

    1. I think you are right. What I thought is that if Tree-ear told Min about Kang's idea, he would practically be cheating the commission by stealing an idea from Kang. I like how you thought of how Min would be more stressed and therefore Min would scold Tree-ear. Also I like how you said that Min should stick with his own technique for the pottery. I never thought of it that way. My favorite part of your paragraph was when you said "He should stay the way he is!". I agree with your opinion because you gave details, reasons, and examples! Your paragraph tells a lot of true facts that not a lot of people see. You showed a different point of view that explains a lot.

  3. I don’t agree with his decision because some people have to pay the price for keeping secrets because secrets can stop thing from happening and sometimes it doesn’t always end up good. Because he might have to do a journey to get clay but if Tree-ear told him Min could ask Kang where he got the slip and Kang could tell him. I think Tree-ear should encourage Min to try it because Min could be famous and maybe let Tree-ear go behind the wheel. Tree-ear also might do it because he could be famous for being Min’s helper and he could get money or clothes or even a house! All from

    1. @Ethan I did not think about people having to pay prices for keeping secrets

    2. Ethan,
I agree with Reid, I didn't really think that secrets mean you have to pay prices. If Tree-Ear tells min the idea, what would the person who makes the final decision think about that. Would he think that Min stole Kang's idea?
      Great Job

    3. Ethan I disagree because don’t you remember at the beginning where Tree-ear said most potters are very secretive

  4. I don’t agree with his decision not to tell Min because that might give Kang a greater chance of becoming the royal commission. I think it gives Kang a greater chance because no one else used the slip for that purpose. I think Tree-ear will encourage Min to use the technique because he knows Min well enough to know that he will get mad at him for stealing another master potter’s idea.

    1. I agree with you Luke his choice was bad to not tell Min because Kang has a better chance of getting in the royal commission. I also agree that he should encourage Min to use his technique and get in the royal commission.

    2. @ Luke Do you really think Kang will become the royal commission just because of that one technique? Or will he have to learn more?

      Delete
    3. @Luke I disagree because copying would technically be cheating but other than that, good thinking

    4. I disagree with you thinking that it wasn't a good decision because if Tree-Ear had told Min about Kang's work, the person who makes the final decision would think that Min stole Kang's idea.
      Great Job

    5. That's clever thinking, Luke, but isn't the emissary going to look at how well-made the pot is, whether than the color of slip? If Min didn't use the colored slip, he still might earn a commission. Also, as it said in the text, colored slip is hard to work with, and Min is a slow worker. If Tree-ear did tell Min, would Min even have enough time to make that kind of pot if he had to redo it multiple times? Also, Crane-man said that if a man is keeping it a secret, and someone else makes it public, it is like stealing. He also said earlier in the book that stealing makes a man no better than a dog. I believe Tree-ear made the correct choice. (This comment is from Hannah A. from Ms. Bound's 5th grade class)

    6. Luke,
I don't agree with you because if Tree-ear were to tell Min then Tree-ear might want to tell more people or maybe other potters might here about it and make one. I think that Min will not make the inlay work with the slip and wait for Kang to show the pots that people have been talking about. If Tree-ear were to tell Mins then Min still wouldn't have the time to make pots to show. I do believe that Tree-ear did a good thing not telling Min and giving up an acidental secret to Min then Min would be displeased to here that Tree-ear had spied on Kang. Also, I do agree with you, Jennifer, about the emissary would think it to be stealing Kangs idea.

    7. Luke,
I agree with you because if Tree-Ear doesn't tell Min Kang has a better chance of getting the royal commission, just like you said. Yet I also agree with Reid since it might not be enough to get the royal commission. With your other statement I don't agree as much, since Min probably won't be convinced so easily if Tree-Ear tries to encourage Min to do it. Since Min would get mad about steeling another potter's idea Tree-Ear would have to do a lot of encouraging to get Min to do the idea with the slip.

  5. I agree with his decision because if Tree-Ear told Min, I think that the chooser would think that he ‘stole’ Kang’s decision. The reason why is that Kang was before him and Min then would not have a chance at the royal commission. I think Tree-Ear will because Crane-Man had told him that once it is revealed, the world would know. Tree-Ear really took those words seriously in the sense that he probably would tell Min, even though it might not be the wisest decision.

    1. @Jen I disagree with you because if he told Min nobody would have proof that he stole it.

    2. @Myself Actually nobody would know if he as long as he didn't tell

    3. I actually agree with you and I think that you did a good job telling what and why, and I also think that you did a great job with describing the problem as well. But in my opinion, it would be even better if you used a little more detail.Besides that, it was amazing.

    4. I agree Jennifer, I think that Tree-ear really did think and believe that, the world would soon know no matter what he does.

  6. I do not agree with Tree-ear in keeping the secret of Kang’s technique to himself because if he told Min, Min might be happier with Tree-ear and tell him more about pottery and Min might become the royal commission if he had his technique and the usage of the slip. Everybody knows that Min is a better potter but if Tree-ear is keeping secrets like these throughout the book Min(In comparison) might not be that good after all. I think Tree-ear will encourage Min to use Kangs technique because if Min gets to be the royal commission because of Tree-ear, Tree-ear might be respected by the people in Ch’ulp’o.

    1. Reid I totally agree with you. I think Kang might have a better chance of winning now because he was the only one to use slip.

    2. @Reid I think that actually Min would get mad and wouldn’t take Tree-ear’s advice. But great thinking!

    3. @christian Why would Min get mad at Tree-ear?

    4. I completely agree Reid! It is not always good to keep a secret you could get in trouble with someone for telling someone who told someone that he saw Kang’s slip. I also agree that Tree-ear should encourage Min to use his technique because he might get into the Royal Commission and Min could be famous and happy with Tree-ear

    5. I too agree with Reid,I think that if Tree-ear was to tell Min Tree-ear would be rewarded, but if he keeps it a secret,Min might not of got the commision.

    6. I think that Min might not be very pleased with Tree-ear if he told him about Kang. He would be mad at tree-ear for listening and watching Kang. It would be like stalking to Min, and Min wants to just make his pottery the way he makes it and not interfere with what the other potters are doing. He wants to keep everyone happy, and stay away from trouble. I think you are on the right track though!

    7. @christian and reid I believe that Min would get mad at Tree-ear, but Tree-ear should still tell him, no matter the cost.

  7. I agree with this decision because Tree-ear must know that Min would never take his advice and would most likely fire him because he was being an eavesdropper. And I don’t think that Tree-ear will encourage Min to try it in to gain the royal commission because if Tree-ear has learned anything from his years with Crane-man it is that stealing is a very bad thing.

    1. @Christian why would Min not take his advice, Min does want to be the royal commission.

      Delete
    2. Christian I never would have thought of it that way! Min probably would get mad at him and ask him if he had learned anything.

      Delete
    3. Christian I disagree because with Min and Kang's techniques combined Min would get the commission for sure. Also, How would anyone find out they copied Kang with the slip and they didn't just think of it on their own.

      Delete
    4. I disagree with you. If Min did both his and Kang's work and techniques the commission would be his. Also who would know they copied. They might think they thought of the slip idea on their own.

      Delete
    5. I totally agree! Min would probably be mad and not trust Tree-ear if he knew that he eavesdropped on Kang.

    6. Christian, good thinking. I didn't think that Min would be mad at Tree-ear for eavesdropping, but that is very clever.

  8. It means that pride and foolishness are “friends” because they always go against each other for they are the same answer to both questions. When Crane-man turns down the food it is pride because he doesn’t want to take advantage of her but it is also foolish because it is an opportunity to get the food because he does only have one leg so it will be hard for him to get his food. I haven’t had any times to relate to it.

  9. I think that pride is when you feel that you have done or doing something good.Foolishness is when you realize that the good thing that you think you did goes wrong.Like when Tree-ear went into Min’s house and looked at his work. The consequence was that Tree-ear had to work for Min.I think that is what “pride and foolishness are so often companions”.I really don’t have any experiences like this
